how to eat organic without really trying
Are you like me and vow to stay away from those unhealthy pesticides, and then at the grocery store go into sticker shock and hesitate to shell out three times the price for organic? Well, here's some good news...
Many fruits and vegetables are already clean, even if they're not grown organically. Hmmm, how can that be you're thinking?
Well, many types of produce have a protective outer covering that keeps pesticides away from the portion of the food that you actually eat.
Take avocados, for example. They're covered by a dark green outer shell, right? Peel that away, and the light green inside deliciousness is perfectly clean for you to enjoy guilt free.
ewg.org has a list of fifteen fruits and vegetables you don't need to buy organic. They call them the "Clean Fifteen."
- Avocados
- Sweet corn
- Pineapples
- Sweet peas, frozen
- Onions
- Papayas
- Eggplant
- Asparagus
- Kiwis
- Cabbages
- Cauliflower
- Cantaloupes
- Broccoli
- Mushrooms
- Honeydew Melons
Spend the extra on the produce that is susceptible to pesticides, and save on the ones that aren't.
